BJP will contest all 117 Punjab seats alone, PM Modi’s speech signals 2027 strategy

Jalandhar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday signalled the Bharatiya Janata Party’s strategy for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with his speech in Jalandhar indicating that the party is preparing to contest all 117 Assembly seats on its own.

Addressing a public rally, Modi targeted the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), accusing them of failing to meet the aspirations of the people of Punjab. His remarks were widely seen as a message to party workers that the BJP intends to fight the next Assembly election independently.

During his Punjab visit, the Prime Minister once again met Sant Niranjan Dass, the head of Dera Sachkhand Ballan, while travelling by train. In his speech, Modi also paid tribute to Guru Ravidas, a move that political observers believe was aimed at strengthening the BJP’s outreach among Punjab’s Dalit community.

Highlighting the BJP government’s performance in neighbouring Haryana, Modi referred to development initiatives and the implementation of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for 24 crops. He used the comparison to promote the party’s “double-engine government” narrative, arguing that Punjab could benefit from having the same party in power at both the Centre and the state.

The Prime Minister also said the Haryana government had established a Sikh Museum to preserve Sikh heritage and traditions.

Modi appeared on stage wearing a green turban, a colour widely associated with the farming community. The gesture was viewed as an attempt to underline the BJP’s outreach to farmers, while he also cited Haryana’s MSP policy as an example of the party’s commitment to agricultural welfare.
