New Delhi: Tensions escalated in the national capital on Monday after Delhi Police detained Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke from the Jantar Mantar protest site as demonstrators attempted to march towards Parliament during the Monsoon Session.
According to claims made by CJP leaders and protesters, several demonstrators managed to move towards Parliament despite heavy security arrangements. They alleged that police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowd, leaving several protesters injured.
The march had been called by CJP to protest alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Delhi Police had earlier stated that no permission had been sought or granted for the proposed march and that prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were in force across the New Delhi district.
Authorities had deployed heavy police and paramilitary personnel, erected barricades and intensified vehicle checks around Parliament and Jantar Mantar to prevent protesters from reaching the high-security zone.
Delhi Police also used tear gas and baton charge on protesters.
