New Jersey: Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a tense final at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.
The breakthrough came in the 106th minute, when Ferran Torres found the net to give Spain the decisive lead after a goalless 90 minutes.
Argentina’s task became even more difficult after Enzo Fernández was shown a red card in stoppage time at the end of normal time, leaving the South American side to play the entire extra period with 10 players.
Spain controlled large spells of the match and eventually capitalised on their numerical advantage to secure the winning goal. Argentina fought hard despite being reduced to 10 men but could not find an equaliser.
The victory earned Spain their second FIFA World Cup title, while Argentina’s bid to successfully defend the trophy came to an end in the final.
Spain’s triumph capped an impressive tournament, with the team producing another disciplined performance to claim football’s biggest prize.
