Chandigarh: Farmers travelling to Delhi for a proposed Kisan Maha Rally against the proposed India-US trade agreement were stopped at the Shambhu border on Tuesday after Haryana Police erected heavy barricades to prevent their entry into the national capital.
The rally, called by the Desh Bachao Morcha, is scheduled to be held at Kisan Ghat in Delhi. Farmers from across Punjab had begun their journey on Monday under the leadership of Sarwan Singh Pandher and other farmer leaders.
After halting overnight at Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, the farmers resumed their march towards Delhi on Tuesday morning. However, they were stopped at the Shambhu border, where Haryana Police had deployed heavy security and installed multiple layers of barricades.
A large number of farmers gathered at the border following the police action, leading to a tense situation in the area.
Authorities also diverted traffic on routes leading to the border to manage congestion and maintain law and order as security arrangements were tightened. Farmers have reiterated their demand to hold the rally in Delhi to protest against the proposed trade agreement.
