New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday questioned the Centre over the use of force against students protesting over alleged examination paper leaks, asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to explain why measures such as tear gas, lathi-charge and pellet guns were used against demonstrators.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Priyanka Gandhi asked the Home Minister who had authorised the use of pellet guns on protesting students. She said the students were peacefully expressing their concerns and demanding the resignation of the Education Minister and strict action against those responsible for jeopardising their future.
Targeting the Prime Minister, she remarked that if the government wanted to regain the trust of Generation Z, making videos from different camera angles would not help. She said the Prime Minister needed to “change the angle of his heart rather than the camera angle.”
Describing the country’s education and examination system as a failure, Priyanka Gandhi alleged that 152 examination paper leaks had taken place over the past 10 years, while claiming that not a single paper leak “mafia” had been punished.
She further alleged that despite the passage of the Anti-Paper Leak Bill in 2024, no accused had been convicted so far.
Questioning the effectiveness of the government’s fast-track courts, the Congress leader claimed their record had been poor and alleged that the CBI’s counsel was not present during the first hearing in the paper leak case.
She concluded by saying that today’s generation was fully aware of who was telling the truth and who was attempting to mislead them.
