New Delhi: A Delhi court on Friday sentenced former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain and four others to life imprisonment in the 2020 Delhi riots case involving the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma.
Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh pronounced the sentence after hearing arguments on the quantum of punishment for the five convicts.
The court had earlier convicted Hussain and the four co-accused for their roles in the killing of Sharma during the communal violence that erupted in northeast Delhi in February 2020.
The prosecution had sought the death penalty for the convicts, arguing that the case fell within the “rarest of rare” category. However, the court awarded life imprisonment to all five convicts.
