Muktsar: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Monday said he was ready to step down from his post if directed by the party high command, but asserted that he would never leave the Congress.
Addressing the ‘Har Booth Congress Mazboot’ meeting, Warring said the party had given him everything and that he had no personal ambitions left to fulfil.
“Congress has given me so much. I have no wishes left. The party has given me a fort-like house in Delhi, and I am a neighbour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. If the high command asks me to resign, I will do so, but I can never leave the Congress,” he said.
Taking a swipe at the Aam Aadmi Party government, Warring claimed no supporter of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had turned up to disrupt the programme because it was a Congress stronghold.
“It is time to show the Mann government the way out,” he said, adding that his political opponents had put up posters against him in the city because they knew they would not be welcomed by the people.
Warring also said he was not afraid of protests involving eggs or ink being thrown at him. Notably, he did not make any remarks about former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi amid reports of internal differences within the state Congress.
Expressing confidence about the party’s prospects, Warring said the Congress would win the Assembly seats of Lambi, Malout and Muktsar. Referring indirectly to a former Congress MLA from Muktsar without naming her, he alleged that some leaders had remained in the party only to secure election tickets.
Several Congress leaders, including Narendra Singh Kauni, Gursant Singh Brar, Harcharan Singh Brar Sotha and Amrita Warring, were present at the meeting.
