New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met Indian athletes who won medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games and congratulated them on their performances.
Modi also shared a 32-second reel on Instagram featuring his interaction with the athletes, including gold medallist boxer Sakshi Chaudhary. Encouraging the players, the Prime Minister said, “Jo khelega, woh khilega… Always cheer for India… Bharat Mata ki Jai.”
India delivered a strong performance at the Commonwealth Games, winning 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze — to finish fourth in the medal standings.
Boxing leads India’s medal haul
Boxing emerged as India’s most successful sport, with Indian boxers winning 10 medals, including seven gold and three silver. Athletics also contributed 10 medals, although India did not win a gold in the discipline.
Weightlifting contributed eight medals, para-athletics six, judo four and para-powerlifting one.
Overall, 37 of India’s 39 medals came from just five major disciplines, underlining the strong contribution of these sports to the country’s campaign.
Modi praised the athletes for their performances and encouraged them to continue working hard and achieve even greater success in future competitions.
