Punjab E News (PEN News): Japan has come up with an unusual cooling solution for people struggling with extreme summer temperatures. The Do Hiemon Box, described as a “Human Refrigerator”, is a one-person cooling booth designed to provide quick relief from intense heat.
The device was developed by Japanese refrigeration and vending-machine manufacturer SDRS and is being sold by industrial equipment supplier TRUSCO Nakayama.
How Does Japan’s Human Refrigerator Work
The Do Hiemon Box resembles a large vending machine and has a built-in seat where one person can sit. Once inside, chilled air of around 5°C is directed toward the head, neck, shoulders and back, while the inside of the booth is maintained at around 15°C.
The cooling system comes with three cooling and airflow settings. The unit also automatically switches off after 20 minutes to prevent excessive cooling. According to the manufacturer, users can begin feeling significantly cooler within around five minutes.
Mobile Cooling Booth Can Be Used Outdoors
The Do Hiemon Box is mounted on wheels, does not require permanent installation and can be operated using a standard 100V power supply. It is designed for both indoor and outdoor use, including construction sites, factories, workplaces and outdoor events where people may be exposed to high temperatures.
The manufacturer says its electricity cost is about 15.8 yen per hour, roughly 48% lower than the comparison spot-air-conditioner cost cited by the company. The unit weighs around 293 kg and has a maximum load capacity of 150 kg.
‘Human Fridge’ Designed for Heatwave Relief
Unlike cooling jackets and portable fans that mainly circulate air around the body, the Do Hiemon Box provides a short, controlled cooling environment for the entire upper body.
The product has attracted attention as Japan and other countries face increasingly intense summer heat. The manufacturer says the booth is intended as a temporary cooling space rather than a replacement for normal air conditioning or heat-safety measures.
The unusual invention has already generated international interest, with the product being considered for workplaces, public facilities and outdoor locations where rapid cooling may be required.
