Punjab E News (PEN News): Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has approached the Supreme Court challenging orders passed by the Allahabad High Court in a case involving allegations of disproportionate assets.
The petition challenges the High Court’s directions concerning verification of allegations that Rahul Gandhi allegedly possesses assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The matter is linked to a complaint filed by Karnataka-based BJP worker S Vignesh Shishir.
Supreme Court to Hear Rahul Gandhi’s Plea on August 17
According to the Supreme Court cause list, Rahul Gandhi’s plea is scheduled to be heard on August 17, 2026 by a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana.
Rahul Gandhi has challenged the Allahabad High Court’s directions relating to the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) verification of the allegations.
What is the Disproportionate Assets Case
The case originated from a complaint by BJP worker S Vignesh Shishir, who alleged that Rahul Gandhi had assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
In May, the Allahabad High Court directed the concerned agencies to examine and verify the allegations and take appropriate action in accordance with law. The court subsequently considered the progress reported by the agencies.
The High Court had also directed several government departments, including the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Revenue Department, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Corporate Affairs and the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) to respond to the allegations.
Rahul Gandhi Seeks Transfer of Case to Delhi High Court
Apart from challenging the Allahabad High Court orders, Rahul Gandhi has filed a separate transfer petition in the Supreme Court, seeking to move the proceedings from the Allahabad High Court to the Delhi High Court.
The matter before the Allahabad High Court is scheduled for further hearing on August 20, while the Supreme Court is expected to consider Rahul Gandhi’s petitions on August 17.
