Amritsar: A bullet was found lodged in the vehicle of former Akal Takht Jathedar and former head granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib, Giani Raghbir Singh, prompting a police investigation.
Giani Raghbir Singh said his driver discovered the bullet while cleaning the vehicle and immediately informed the police. He said there had been no prior threat calls or warnings.
According to Giani Raghbir Singh, CCTV footage reviewed by him showed a sound at around 11.04 pm on August 12, after which a security guard appeared to notice something. The footage also showed a young man wearing a red T-shirt entering the nearby area, talking on his phone and moving around before leaving.
Police suspect bullet may have been fired into the air
Police Commissioner Harmanbir Singh Gill, who visited Giani Raghbir Singh’s residence to assess the situation, said the preliminary investigation suggested that the bullet may have been fired into the air before travelling downwards and striking the bonnet of the vehicle.
The commissioner said investigators were examining whether the incident was a deliberate attack. Police are also trying to identify a suspicious person seen riding a scooter in the CCTV footage. Further questioning will be carried out if the suspect is apprehended.
Congress MP and former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa condemned the incident, describing it as “deeply concerning and condemnable”.
In a post on X, Randhawa said such incidents raise serious questions over the law-and-order situation in Punjab. He urged the police administration to conduct an immediate and impartial investigation and bring those responsible to justice.
Giani Raghbir Singh also expressed concern over the incident, particularly in view of the heightened security arrangements ahead of Independence Day on August 15, and called for a thorough investigation.
