Nanded: Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal is in stable condition after undergoing surgery following an alleged kirpan attack inside a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra, doctors treating him said on Friday.
The surgery lasted around 90 minutes after Badal sustained an injury to his right hand. Doctors said he suffered a tendon injury and a sharp wound, while treatment was also provided to his ulnar artery.
“He is out of danger,” a hospital doctor said, adding that a plastic surgeon was involved in treating the artery injury.
An official said Badal is expected to be discharged on Friday and may be flown to Punjab in the afternoon.
According to police, Badal was attacked by Jaspal Singh, a member of a Nihang organisation, inside Gurdwara Mata Sahib Devan Ji Mugat on the outskirts of Nanded city. Badal was subsequently taken to Yashosai Hospital for treatment.
Police probe motive behind attack
Police have not yet established the motive behind the alleged attack.
According to officials, Jaspal Singh, who is believed to be in his early 60s, has been working as a sevadar or volunteer at the gurdwara for around two years. He reportedly holds degrees in commerce and law and is based with his family in Pune, while living alone in Nanded.
A case has been registered against him under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempted murder, voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons or means, and voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a public servant to prevent him from performing his duties.
