Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has accused Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi of disrespecting Vande Mataram and demanded that they apologise to the people of the country.
The controversy arose during an Independence Day programme organised by the Congress at its party office in New Delhi on Saturday. The BJP has alleged that senior Congress leaders disrupted the singing of Vande Mataram during the event.
Yadav said Vande Mataram was not merely a song but an important slogan of India’s freedom struggle. Describing the alleged incident as condemnable, he called on Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and other leaders allegedly involved to acknowledge their mistake and apologise to the country.
The allegations come amid a wider political debate over the role and significance of Vande Mataram during Independence Day celebrations.
