Faridkot: High drama unfolded at a wedding ceremony in Faridkot on Wednesday when police arrested the bride’s father during the Anand Karaj ceremony. The arrest led to a scuffle between police personnel and family members at the spot.
A video of the incident reportedly shows a man lying in front of the police vehicle, while police personnel drag him away from the vehicle’s path. A police officer’s firearm was also visible during the confrontation.
Family alleges force during arrest
The bride’s brother alleged that the police arrived while the Anand Karaj was underway and forcibly took their father away. He claimed that some of the personnel were in civilian clothes and identified themselves as members of the Gidderbaha police.
According to the family, they requested the police to allow the wedding ceremony to finish and said they would take the accused to the police station afterwards. The family also alleged that police personnel manhandled them and twisted the bride’s hand.
Police officials have denied the allegations, saying the family members themselves confronted the police during the arrest.
Police say accused was wanted in theft case
Gidderbaha police station in-charge Parvinder Singh said the arrested man, Gareeb Singh alias Raju, is wanted in a case involving the alleged theft of transformers and electric motors.
Police said an FIR had already been registered against him and that five members of the alleged gang had previously been arrested. Acting on information that Raju was attending a wedding in Sandhwan village, a police team went to the venue and arrested him.
The officer clarified that the arrested man was not the bride’s biological father but her dharam father. He also rejected the family’s allegations of police assault, saying the confrontation occurred when family members allegedly resisted the arrest.
Police said the arrest proceedings have been recorded at Kotkapura police station.
