Chandigarh: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia has said that people in Punjab want the SAD and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to come together again.
Majithia said the final decision on any alliance would be taken by the top leadership of both parties after discussions. He added that the situation would become clearer in the coming days.
The SAD and BJP had parted ways following the dispute over the farm laws. According to Majithia, circumstances in Punjab have changed since then, with the deteriorating law-and-order situation and other issues prompting people to seek a renewed alliance between the two parties.
His remarks came a day after his sister and Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal indicated that the SAD could consider returning to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Majithia said the alliance between former prime ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Parkash Singh Badal had been based on communal harmony, peace and Hindu-Sikh unity, and had proved successful in both Punjab and at the Centre.
He said the current public sentiment was strongly in favour of the two parties coming together, while leaving the final decision to their respective leaderships.
