Pune: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi interacted with women and students at the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme in Pune on Saturday, where discussions focused on women’s rights, harassment and challenges faced by students.
During the event, Bhojpuri singer Neha Singh Rathore, known for her satirical songs, spoke about the abuse and threats she allegedly receives for questioning the government. Rathore said she had been facing criticism for years but had no intention of backing down.
Gandhi responded with a smile, saying that he too had been subjected to abuse for years but had not changed.
Gandhi raises concerns over women’s safety
Gandhi spoke about the position of women in society and violence against them. He described women as one of the country’s biggest strengths and criticised social restrictions that he said seek to suppress their voices.
He also criticised the reference in Manusmriti to women being placed under the authority of men at different stages of their lives, arguing that women have an independent identity and should not be viewed as subordinate to their fathers, husbands or sons.
During the interaction, Gandhi also cited a figure claiming that around 80% of women face some form of harassment.
Student raises hostel issues
An Adivasi student raised concerns about poor hostel conditions, inadequate basic facilities and students who are on hunger strike over their demands.
Gandhi offered his support and said he would join the protesting students if invited, telling them that he was ready to sit with them during their protest.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut alleged that the BJP was afraid of Gandhi and claimed that the administration had imposed more than 30 conditions before granting permission for the programme.
