AAP MP Malvinder Kang calls GMADA a ‘hub of corruption’, targets own Punjab government

Mohali: Aam Aadmi Party MP from Anandpur Sahib Malvinder Singh Kang has accused the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) of becoming a “hub of corruption”, putting his own party’s Punjab government under pressure over alleged selective demolition of shops in Saini Majra village.

Reacting to the demolition carried out by GMADA officials, Kang said he had received several calls from residents alleging that the action was selective. He said he had spoken to authority officials and asked them to act fairly.

According to Kang, either all illegal encroachments should be removed or shopkeepers should first be given a warning and an opportunity to comply.

‘Officials taking bribes being spared’

Kang alleged that corruption within the authority had increased significantly and called for action against officials accused of taking bribes.

He alleged that shopkeepers who pay money are allowed to continue, while those who refuse to pay face demolition action. He said many of those affected were economically vulnerable people who were struggling to earn a livelihood.

Kang said he had spoken to GMADA Chief Administrator Sandeep Rishi late Tuesday night and questioned him over the alleged failure to curb corruption.

Kang announces protest

The Anandpur Sahib MP said he would lead a protest against GMADA officials on Thursday, demanding action against officials allegedly involved in corruption.

He also urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to intervene, stop what he described as harassment of poor residents and take action against officials found guilty of corruption.

Kang has previously criticised aspects of the AAP government’s functioning, including police action against protesting farmers in Bathinda and alleged illegal sand mining in Punjab. He had also opposed the state government’s land-pooling policy.
