New Delhi: CJP leader Saurav Das on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that the organisation had withdrawn its call for a protest on September 5.
Das read out a statement before a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta subsequently told the court that the Centre remained committed to assurances given to CJP leaders in July, following which they had called off their 36-day protest over alleged irregularities in NEET and other examinations.
Mehta said the Centre, along with the governments of Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam, was willing to withdraw cases registered against protesters, except in cases where individuals had already been named in criminal offences.

The Solicitor General urged the Supreme Court to exercise its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution and direct that the cases against the protesters be treated as closed.
Mehta also told the court that the government would formulate a framework within three months for providing compensation to the families of students who died by suicide.
Article 142 empowers the Supreme Court to pass orders necessary to ensure “complete justice” in matters before it.
The Centre had on Monday approached the Supreme Court seeking the use of Article 142 to quash FIRs registered against student protesters. The matter was mentioned before the bench headed by CJI Surya Kant, with the Centre seeking an urgent hearing on Tuesday.
