Amritsar: Police on Wednesday shot and arrested most-wanted gangster Harman Boparai during an encounter in the district. According to police, the gangster opened fire when officers tried to stop him.
SHO Daljit Singh narrowly escaped injury during the firing, with a bullet grazing his arm. Around six rounds were fired from both sides, police said. In the retaliatory firing, Harman sustained a bullet injury to his leg.
Police arrested him at the spot and shifted him to a hospital for treatment. Harman, a resident of Boparay, Gurdaspur, is named in several criminal cases, including the grenade attack at Hanuman Chowk in Gurdaspur. He has also been declared a proclaimed offender in one of the cases.
Amritsar Rural SSP Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said the firing had taken place in the Mattewal police station area in the morning. Several police teams, including the CIA, were investigating the incident when they received information that Harman Boparay was expected to enter the area.
Acting on the information, police set up a checkpoint near Sue on the road leading from the Bhoa side towards Chugawan. Police are now investigating the other cases registered against Harman and his alleged criminal activities.
