New Delhi: Amid calls for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accused him of being put in charge of “match-fixing” India’s elections by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Gandhi made the allegation after sharing a post by the Kerala Congress that cited media reports claiming that former IAS officer Gyanesh Kumar had asked a former Kerala chief secretary to contest an election on a BJP ticket after retirement.
In a post on X, Gandhi alleged that Kumar, while serving as an IAS officer, had been used to recruit people for the BJP and was later made the “umpire” in charge of “match-fixing” elections.
There was no immediate response from the Chief Election Commissioner to the allegations made by Rahul Gandhi or the Kerala Congress.
Kumar has faced criticism from opposition parties over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and following a media report that claimed there were differences within the Election Commission.
The Election Commission, however, has maintained that all decisions taken by it, including those related to the SIR, were approved unanimously.
