Phagwara: Lovely Professional University (LPU) has decided to suspend regular classes on campus for 10 days amid continuing student protests and tensions between protesters and the police and administration.
Following incidents of alleged arson and stone-pelting on the campus on Sunday evening, the university administration issued a message to students late at night, stating that regular classes would remain suspended from September 28, 2026, for 10 days to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
The university also announced that mid-term examinations had been postponed until further notice. Students will be informed separately about the revised examination schedule.
Students were advised that, if they wished, they could return to their hometowns during the 10-day period after consulting their parents or guardians. Those staying on campus were advised to remain inside their hostels or residences for their safety and avoid unnecessary movement or involvement in any activity that could lead to unrest.
The university urged students to remain calm, follow official instructions and stay connected for further updates.
Amid the reported violence, some anxious students staying in hostels also began packing their belongings to return home.
The protests have continued for the past three days following allegations of rape involving a female student at the GH3 hostel. On Sunday evening, police vehicles were reportedly vandalised and set on fire during the protests.
Students have expressed dissatisfaction with the action taken so far in connection with the alleged incident. The LPU administration, meanwhile, has repeatedly described the alleged rape incident as a rumour and false information.
