Thiruvananthapuram: India defeated the West Indies by eight wickets in the first ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Batting first after losing the toss, the West Indies posted 295/7 in 50 overs. Justin Greaves was their top scorer, making 101 off 108 balls.
India chased down the target in 41.4 overs, reaching 300/2. Virat Kohli and captain Shubman Gill led the successful chase.
Kohli remained unbeaten on 139 off 88 balls, hitting 10 fours and nine sixes. He registered his 55th ODI century and 86th international hundred.
Kohli also became the fastest batter to complete 15,000 ODI runs, reaching the milestone in 303 innings and surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s previous mark of 377 innings, achieved in 2007 against South Africa.
Gill scored 110 off 108 balls, including 13 fours and a six, to bring up his 10th ODI century.
For India, Kuldeep Yadav was the leading wicket-taker with four wickets.
