Tarn Taran: An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sarpanch was shot dead in broad daylight at Toot bus stand in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district on Tuesday, police said.
The sarpanch was sitting in his Innova when three unidentified men allegedly arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire. Three bullets reportedly hit the sarpanch before the attackers fled the spot.
His driver, who was accompanying him, also sustained injuries from bullet fragments and is undergoing treatment. According to the driver, the attackers fired several rounds at the vehicle.
People at the scene rushed the sarpanch to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The victim’s wife alleged that the family had been receiving threats and that ₹50 lakh had been demanded as ransom. She said they had received threats on several occasions.
Police have launched a search for the attackers and are examining CCTV footage from the area. Images of the suspected motorcycle-borne assailants have also been released, and authorities have appealed to the public to share any information that could help identify or locate them.
The killing has created tension in the area, while police continue to investigate the motive behind the attack.
