Chandigarh: Newly appointed Punjab Congress president Pargat Singh on Sunday pledged to pursue clean politics and ruled out political vendetta, saying his approach would be guided by principles rather than revenge, both within and outside the party.
Taking charge amid heavy rain on the first day of Navratri, Pargat Singh outlined his political approach and said he would not engage in retaliatory politics against opponents or party colleagues.
The event also saw senior Congress leaders come together, signalling a show of unity within the state unit. Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot attended the ceremony, along with Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and former state Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, among other senior leaders.
Warring, whose supporters had gathered at his residence earlier in the day, drew attention when he arrived at the event. He said he had come to congratulate Pargat Singh despite opposition from a section of party leaders and reaffirmed his commitment to working for the Congress.
Warring’s supporters raised slogans during the gathering.
Channi described the rain on the occasion as an auspicious sign for the new Congress president.
