Punjab cop guarding anti-drone system linked to 23 heroin consignments: NCB

Chandigarh: A Punjab Police constable deployed on an anti-drone system along the international border has allegedly been working with drug smugglers across the border, with a Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) investigation indicating that he received around 23 consignments of heroin since June.

The constable, identified as Karandeep Singh, was arrested by the NCB on October 15 after 15 kg of heroin was allegedly recovered from him.

According to sources, Singh allegedly provided Pakistan-based smugglers with safe locations for dropping heroin using drones and shared the coordinates with them. He also reportedly helped police recover two consignments. Investigators found that he allegedly received money and drugs from smugglers in return for his assistance. Sources also said he consumed heroin himself.

Singh was deployed in the international border area under the jurisdiction of Khalra police station, where he was assigned to an anti-drone system intended to detect drug consignments sent from Pakistan using drones. He had also obtained an arms licence, reportedly citing a threat to his life.

The Punjab government has deployed several buses equipped with anti-drone systems along the international border under the ‘Baaz Akh’ initiative. The investigation has raised concerns over the alleged involvement of a police officer assigned to prevent cross-border drug smuggling.

The allegations are part of the ongoing investigation, and the claims against Singh have not been established in court.
