At least 68 killed in collision between two trains in Spain

Toledo: At least 68 people were killed in a collision between two trains in Spain’s Toledo province on Wednesday, officials said. The death toll could rise as rescue teams continue searching for survivors trapped beneath the wreckage.

Earlier, Castilla-La Mancha regional president Emiliano García-Page said at least 80 people had been injured and warned that the number of fatalities could increase as rescue operations continued.

Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, told public broadcaster TVE that two high-speed trains travelling in the same direction were involved in the accident. One train struck the rear of the other, causing two carriages to derail.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision, while emergency teams continue rescue and recovery operations.
