Mansa: A court on Thursday remanded Waris Punjab De leaders Lakha Sidhana and Mohanjit Sheron in four-day police custody after they were detained near a protest in Mansa seeking justice for Parvinder Singh Jhotta.
The two were produced before duty magistrate Ankit Airy through video conferencing at his residence in Mansa. City-2 police station secured their remand, a senior police officer confirmed.
According to reports, Sidhana was detained two days earlier near the deputy commissioner’s residence, where the protest was being held. Plainclothes police personnel allegedly took him away in a vehicle despite attempts by some youths to intervene. Other protesters were also reportedly taken into police vehicles.
Following Sidhana’s detention, Bhim Singh Fauji, father of Parvinder Singh Jhotta, appealed to people across Punjab to join the protest immediately.
Hardeep Singh Sidhu, media in-charge of the action committee, had said that several people were detained during the police action. Those named included student union district president Arvinder Kaur, Gurjit Singh, brother of Daljit Singh, who died allegedly following a drug overdose, and several other protesters and Waris Punjab De members from different parts of Punjab.
The detentions came amid tensions following the death of Daljit Singh, a young man from Bhamme Kalan village. Meanwhile, the protest seeking justice for Parvinder Singh Jhotta continues.
