New Delhi: The Supreme Court has reserved its verdict on restrictions and regulations governing the use of firecrackers in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), observing that annual directions have failed to prevent violations and curb air pollution during Diwali.
During the hearing, the court noted that despite issuing instructions every year, firecrackers continue to be used, contributing to deteriorating air quality. It stressed that imposing restrictions alone would not resolve the problem and that effective enforcement and public awareness were equally important.
Suggests involving celebrities in awareness campaigns
The court suggested involving prominent public figures, including cricketer Virat Kohli, in campaigns encouraging people to avoid firecrackers. Such personalities could use their influence to spread awareness among their followers and the wider public.
The court observed that repeated violations of its directions highlighted the need to change public behaviour through sustained awareness efforts, alongside ensuring compliance with existing restrictions.
Air pollution remains a major concern in Delhi-NCR, particularly during Diwali, when firecracker use can worsen air quality. The court’s final decision is expected to clarify the next steps regarding restrictions on firecrackers in the region.
