Two AAP MLAs from Punjab reportedly resign from assembly amid BJP switch speculation

Chandigarh: Punjab’s political circles witnessed fresh speculation on Sunday after reports emerged that two ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jouramajra, had resigned from the state legislative assembly. The two legislators are also reported to be preparing to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), although this development has not been independently confirmed.

Pathanmajra represents the Sanour constituency, while Jouramajra is the MLA from Samana. Their reported resignations come shortly after the AAP released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Punjab assembly elections.

Jouramajra, a former cabinet minister in the Bhagwant Mann government, has reportedly been unhappy with the party leadership after it appointed former Akali leader Surjit Singh Rakhra as the constituency in-charge for Samana. The move was seen as a setback to Jouramajra’s position in his own constituency.

Pathanmajra, meanwhile, has been embroiled in legal controversies. A case was registered against him following allegations of rape, cheating and criminal intimidation. He was arrested in March 2026 after remaining away from the police investigation for several months. He was subsequently granted bail in the cases.

The reported political shift by the two legislators could have implications for the AAP’s position in Punjab ahead of the next assembly elections. However, formal confirmation of their resignations and any decision to join the BJP is awaited.
