Chandigarh: Police in Amritsar have arrested a sarpanch along with two associates for allegedly possessing 4 kg of heroin and illegal weapons.
According to officials, the accused were travelling in a Scorpio SUV with a VIP registration number when they were intercepted during a naka near Mehta. Acting on a tip-off, police teams laid a trap and apprehended the suspects.
The accused have been identified as Lovepreet Singh, Simarpreet Singh and Balwant Singh. Police said both narcotics and illegal arms were recovered from their possession.
ASI Palwinder Singh of Mehta police station said the trio was allegedly involved in drug trafficking and was en route when intercepted based on specific intelligence inputs.
Meanwhile, photos of the arrested sarpanch with leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party have surfaced on social media, triggering political controversy. Claims are being made that the accused had links with local party leaders, though no official statement has been issued by the party so far.
Police said further investigation is underway to establish the network and possible links of accused.
