New Delhi: The Government of India has said that the issue of delays in processing Australian student visas for Indian applicants will be raised with the Australian government during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the country.

Replying to a question, Vishwesh Negi, Joint Secretary (Indo-Pacific) in the Ministry of External Affairs, said Australia continues to be one of the most preferred destinations for Indian students. He added that the government is aware of delays in student visa approvals and other issues related to the admission process.

Negi said India has been in constant touch with the Australian government to ensure that genuine students and professionals are not adversely affected by delays in visa processing. He confirmed that the issue will form part of the discussions between Prime Minister Modi and the Australian leadership during the visit.

PM Modi to visit three countries from July 8 to 11

Briefing the media about the Prime Minister’s foreign tour, Foreign Secretary Rudrendra Tandon said Narendra Modi will visit Indonesia on July 8-9, Australia on July 10, and New Zealand on July 11.

During his visit to Melbourne, the Prime Minister will participate in the third India-Australia Annual Summit, where both sides are expected to hold detailed discussions on strengthening cooperation in critical minerals, cyber security, resilient supply chains and emerging technologies.

Tandon also said that after Australia, Prime Minister Modi will travel to New Zealand for talks with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. He noted that it will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in nearly 40 years.

Khalistan supporters, terrorism also on agenda

Responding to a question about Khalistan supporters active in Australia, Rudrendra Tandon said India consistently raises concerns over terrorism and violent extremism at international forums.

He said India has repeatedly underlined that terrorism and violent extremism pose a serious threat to global peace and security and that terrorism is a crime against humanity. He expressed confidence that Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand share India’s commitment to combating terrorism and violent extremism.
