Change in conditions for import of business laptops and computers

The central government has changed the old licensing conditions for the import of IT hardware products like laptops and computers. Now an online approval system has been set up for importers of such products.
Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) Santosh Kumar Sarangi said the new licensing or approval system is primarily aimed at monitoring the import of these products to ensure that they are coming from reliable sources.
This provision will come into force immediately. He said that some changes have been made in the policy keeping in mind the concerns of the stakeholders regarding the control of imports. Sarangi said the system will allow importers to go anywhere and fill up details without contact. The announcement assumes significance as the government had on August 4 said importers would need a licence to import these items from November 1 with an aim to boost domestic manufacturing and cut imports from countries like China.
