13 jails in Punjab to have jammers: Govt submits status report in HC
Punjab E News: In view of the security arrangements of jails in Punjab, on the cognizance of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, IG of The Prisons Department submitted a status report on Wednesday.
In this, the government said that after getting permission from the Finance Department, it will install jammers in jails in the coming 6 to 9 months.
According to the report, the Cabinet Secretariat is the nodal authority for granting permission for the purchase of jammers. As per the guidelines for procurement of jammers given by the Cabinet Secretariat (Security), at present, two public sector industrial institutes Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) are approved sources for procurement of jammers.
The Punjab government has dropped BSNL from the list of buying jammers as it is not approved by the Cabinet Secretariat.

The High Court came down heavily on the Punjab government on the last hearing, saying that if the Punjab government had failed to protect the jails, why not give the responsibility to the Central government. The court had observed that the Punjab government was said to have installed 4G jammers on rent in jails. The High Court had said that why money is being worried in the matter of security. In the era of 5G, the Punjab government could not even install jammers of 4G technology.
