Four policemen, including a police officer injured in clash between inmates in Gurdaspur jail
Chandigarh: Two groups of prisoners clashed in the Central Jail here today. As the situation spiraled out of control, the jail siren continued to ring continuously for more than ten minutes.
When the police force arrived to regain control, the prisoners became even more agitated and attacked the police, resulting in injuries to four employees.
Among those injured were Dhariwal police station in-charge Mandeep Singh, jail security chief Jodha Singh, constable Baljinder Singh from Kahnuwan police station, and assistant sub-inspector Jagdeep Singh, a police photographer. All of them have been admitted to the civil hospital for treatment.
According to the information received, the jail premises are being severely vandalized by the prisoners. A group of inmates, numbering around 60-70, has reached the roof of the jail mess and is tearing down banners while pelting stones at the forces below.
Additionally, the inmates have placed a gas cylinder on the roof. Jail beds have been thrown out and set on fire by the inmates.
A large number of additional forces from outside districts have been called in to manage the situation, and tear gas shells are being fired by the police to control the unrest.
