PM-led panel appoints former IAS Gyanesh Kumar, Sukhbir Sandhu as Election Commissioners

New Delhi: Bureaucrats Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar have been appointed as the next Election Commissioners of the country.

Alongside Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was also part of this panel. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has criticized the Centre for the law that replaces the Chief Justice of India in the selection committee.

“The Chief Justice of India should have been on this committee. The law, enacted last year, has reduced the meeting to a mere “formality”,” said Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

He further expressed concerns that the government’s majority in the panel influences the decision-making process regarding the appointment of the Election Commissioner, leading to outcomes that align with their preferences.
