Girl dies after eating cake, police register case against 4 including bakery owner, 3 arrested

Patiala: A case has been registered against four persons, including the bakery owner, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, among others, in connection with the death of a 10-year-old girl after eating cake in Patiala, police said on Saturday.

Three accused Rajjeet Singh, Pawan Kumar and Vijay Kumar have been arrested by the police, while bakery owner Gurmeet Singh resident Green Beau Colony Patiala is still absconding.

In search of him, continuous raids are being conducted by the police. The accused were produced before the court and remanded to two-day police custody. The arrested accused include the manager and employee of the bakery.

According to the information, March 24 was the birthday of 10-year-old Manvi, a resident of Aman Nagar. She lives with her mother Kajal and younger sister at her maternal grandparents’ house for the last few years. Mother Kajal works in Eye Park Mohali.

According to the mother, she had ordered the cake online at around 6 pm. The cake was delivered home at half past six. At around 7.15 pm, Maanvi cut the cake with great joy in the presence of the whole family and everyone ate it. But soon after, the health of the rest of the family members including Maanvi started deteriorating. Everyone started vomiting. When the health of 10-year-old Manvi worsened, she was taken to the hospital. Manvi died in the hospital the next day on the morning of 25 March.

According to the police, action was taken under Section 174 CrPC in the first case. But later the family members feared Manvi’s death after eating the cake. Therefore, the police have now registered a case on the statement of mother Kajal.
