57-year-old Indian national Jaspal Singh, who entered the US illegally, dies

Washington: An Indian national, who came to the US illegally, died in an Atlanta hospital. He was to be sent back to India.

The US Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said the Indian Consulate in New York has been notified of the death of 57-year-old Jaspal Singh. His family members have also been informed about it.

Jaspal Singh died on April 15 at a hospital in Atlanta. Jaspal Singh first entered the US legally on October 25, 1992. On January 21, 1998, an immigration judge ordered him to leave the US, after which he returned to India.

He tried to enter the US illegally again on June 29, 2023, but was arrested by authorities from the US-Mexico border. After his arrest, he was handed over to the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) of Atlanta, from where he was held in a detention center in Atlanta.

In the US, when a person dies in a detention center, the ERO has to notify Parliament, non-governmental organizations, the media within two working days and also share the details related to that person on its website.
