77-year-old British woman fined $3300 at an Australian airport for a chicken sandwich

June Armstrong, 77, from Canterbury, England was fined $3300 for a chicken sandwich which is forgot to declare. She traveled from New Zealand to Australia. The sandwich, for which we usually pay Rs 300-400 on a flight, cost the woman Rs 1.5 lakh. This was because she had forgotten to eat her sandwich during the flight.
      According to the information, 77-year-old pensioner had traveled to Brisbane, Australia from New Zealand with some friends. When their luggage was being checked by customs, they were taken aside. She was then informed that she had been fined £1,589 or $3300 which is approximately Rs 1.65 lakh in Indian currency.
      As she had taken a 4 am flight on May 4, she couldn’t recall whether she had brought the chicken sandwich from home or purchased it there, but it was found in her bag. During the flight, she fell asleep and forgot about it, resulting in the hefty fine.
      The fine for the violation, according to the country’s laws, can exceed $3,000 if a foreigner fails to declare items that pose a “high level of risk to biosecurity,” with the meat in the sandwich falling into this category.
