Harmeet Dhillon, Indian-American Attorney, supports Punjab farmers’ protests
Washington: Indian-American attorney and Republican activist Harmeet Dhillon, recently appointed as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights by US President-elect Donald Trump, has expressed her support for Punjab’s farmers protesting against India’s controversial farm laws.
Trump, in his statement, praised Dhillon as a “tireless defender of constitutional rights” and highlighted her role as a “respected member of the Sikh religious community.”
Dhillon, known for her activism, has voiced concerns over issues like “Indian death squads” and called attention to the farmers’ plight through posts on X (formerly Twitter).
Referring to her family’s roots in farming, Dhillon posted, “I stand by #FarmersProtests.” She also urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage with the protesters and work towards a compromise.
“As a child in Punjab, it breaks my heart to see that Punjabi farmers are being attacked for protesting against big-corporation farm laws. These laws will destroy their fields, way of life, and culture,” she wrote.
Dhillon called on Modi to “listen, meet, and compromise” with the agitating farmers.
