Landing Canada five-day ago, Punjab-origin youth kills wife; arrested

Toronto: A woman from Ludhiana, Punjab, was stabbed to death by her husband in Canada. Not only that, but the perpetrator also recorded the entire incident and sent the video to his mother. The man had arrived in Canada just five days earlier to meet his daughter.

Upon receiving the report, Canadian police apprehended the accused. The deceased has been identified as Balwinder Kaur (41), a resident of Malla village in Jagraon.

Himmat Singh said that his daughter Balwinder Kaur had married Jagpreet Singh, also known as Raju, a resident of Pakhowal Road in Ludhiana in 2000. Following the marriage, Balwinder was subjected to harassment by her in-laws for dowry.

Himmat Singh, the father of four daughters, explained that he refrained from taking action against his daughter’s in-laws due to concerns for his other daughters’ safety. If he had taken action, the lives of his other daughters would have been jeopardized. Hence, he remained silent. Balwinder Kaur is survived by her two children, Harnoorpreet Kaur and Gurnoor Singh.

Himmat Singh revealed that Balwinder Kaur had sent her daughter Harnoorpreet Kaur to study in Canada after completing her IELTS in 2020. In January 2022, Balwinder traveled to Canada to visit her daughter. During this time, her husband Jagpreet Singh persistently urged her to join him in Canada. Due to his insistence, Harnoorpreet persuaded her father, Jagpreet Singh, to visit Canada on 11 March 2024.

Himmat Singh disclosed that Jagpreet Singh fatally stabbed Balwinder Kaur just five days after arriving in Canada. Jagpreet also recorded a video of the incident and sent it to his mother in Ludhiana.

Upon seeing the video, Gurnoor Singh, Balwinder’s son, informed the family about his mother’s murder. Jagpreet Singh has since been arrested by Canadian authorities.
