Maryam Nawaz becomes first woman chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province

Islamabad: Maryam Nawaz, daughter of three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and senior PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz, today became the first woman chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province.

Maryam, a 50-year-old senior vice-president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), won the chief minister’s election amid a walkout by members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), a party supporter of former prime minister Imran Khan.

Maryam visited her mother’s grave at Jati Umra before leaving for the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
