Qatar police returns one Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib, to return second soon: MHA

New Delhi: One of the two holy Saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib seized by police in Qatar’s capital Doha has been returned with honour. The Indian Embassy swung into action after Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami objected. This was followed by contact with Qatari authorities.

“We have seen reports regarding the confiscation of the Guru Granth Sahib by Qatari authorities and the demand by the Sikh community for their release,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a press release.

Government had already taken up the matter with Qatar side and our Embassy in Doha informed the Sikh community in Doha about the developments.

“The Qatar officials had taken two versions of Guru Granth Sahib from two persons. They were accused of running religious establishments without the approval of the Qatar government. Our Embassy extended all possible assistance within the framework of local laws. One version of the holy book was returned by the Qatar authorities and assured that the other form would also be kept with respect.”
