Trump says India to cut tariffs, calls for fair trade practices
Washington: US President Donald Trump said that India has agreed to reduce tariffs on American goods. “India imposes tremendous tariffs on us,” Trump said, reiterating his stance on trade policies.
Earlier, Trump had announced that from April 2, 2025, the US would impose reciprocal tariffs on countries charging higher taxes than the US. He argued that tariffs would strengthen American manufacturing and create jobs.
Meanwhile, tensions between the US and China over tariffs have escalated. The US recently announced a 20% tariff on Chinese imports, prompting China to warn that it is prepared for the confrontation.
China urges India to counter ‘hegemony’
Amid rising trade tensions, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged India and China to play a key role in opposing global “hegemony and power politics.”
He said that cooperation between the two nations could contribute to a more democratic global order and strengthen the Global South—comprising developing nations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
