World Health Organization warns: 3500 deaths every day due to hepatitis

New Delhi: The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday that the number of people who have lost their lives due to viral hepatitis is increasing and it is killing 3,500 people every day and 1.3 million people every year globally.

New data from 187 countries show that the number of deaths due to viral hepatitis increased from 1.1 million in 2019 to 1.3 million in 2022, the who said in its 2024 World Hepatitis Report.

According to the report, 83 percent of these deaths are due to hepatitis B and 17 percent are due to hepatitis C.

Nearly two-thirds of the hepatitis B and C cases are in Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia and Vietnam.
