Mohali: The Akali Dal Waris Punjab De is considering fielding jailed MP Amritpal Singh against Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal in the upcoming Punjab assembly elections. According to party sources, Amritpal may contest from two constituencies.
The proposal was discussed at a high-level meeting of senior party leaders in Mohali on Friday. Amritpal’s father, Tarsem Singh, was also present at the meeting.
Sources said Amritpal could contest from either Lambi or Gidderbaha, with the party having recently conducted a survey in Lambi. The plan under consideration is to field him from whichever of these two constituencies Sukhbir Badal chooses to contest.
The party is also considering fielding Amritpal from the constituency contested by chief minister Bhagwant Mann.
The party had earlier planned to field Amritpal from Rampura Phul, where Sarabjeet Singh, its candidate in the previous Lok Sabha election, received his highest number of votes from an assembly segment within the Faridkot parliamentary constituency.
However, Friday’s meeting reportedly favoured shifting Amritpal’s proposed candidature from Rampura Phul to the seat contested by Mann. The party has fielded Gill Raunta from Rampura Phul.
The final decision on Amritpal’s constituencies and candidature is yet to be formally announced.
