New Delhi: Former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was detained while heading towards Jantar Mantar amid protests demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, as police detained more than 1,000 protesters from several parts of the capital, including Jantar Mantar, Connaught Place and Minto Bridge.
Protesters allegedly broke through barricades in several areas, prompting police to disperse the crowds and take people into custody. One protester reportedly sustained a head injury during the clashes.
Near Akashvani Bhawan on Imtiaz Ali Marg, hundreds of demonstrators allegedly crossed barricades and pelted stones at police personnel, injuring two officers. Police detained several protesters and strengthened security in the area.
Earlier, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijit Deepke was detained aboard a flight after it arrived in Delhi from Mumbai. CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were also taken into custody.
In a pre-recorded video released after his detention, Deepke said Ajinkya Shinde would take charge of the movement.
The protests have prompted heightened security measures across central Delhi, with police restricting access to key locations and detaining demonstrators attempting to reach Jantar Mantar.
