Chandigarh: Voting for student council elections at colleges affiliated with Panjab University is underway in Chandigarh on Monday, with students entering polling booths after showing their identity cards.
The polling process has seen gatherings and slogan-shouting at some campuses. At DAV College, Sector 10, the area outside the college gate was cleared by police after a large number of students gathered and began raising slogans against each other.
A total of 39,386 students across eight colleges are eligible to vote. Student organisation panels and independent candidates are contesting various posts.
At DAV College, Sector 10, there are 7,521 eligible voters, including 4,570 male and 2,951 female students. Elections are being held for posts including president, vice-president, general secretary and joint secretary.
GGDSD College, Sector 32, has the highest number of voters at 10,513, including 6,046 male and 4,467 female students. Candidates from different alliances are contesting, while an independent candidate is also in the fray for the president’s post.
At PG Government College, Sector 11, 5,389 students are eligible to vote, while Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, has 5,147 voters.
At some colleges, candidates have already been elected unopposed. No polling is being held at MCM DAV College, Sector 36; Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector 26; and Government College of Commerce and Business Administration, Sector 50.
Meanwhile, police made additional security arrangements outside the campuses. At SD College, Sector 32, a group of students and a student union leader attempted to approach the college in several vehicles but were stopped at a police barricade. An argument broke out between the students and police before officers pushed the group back.
At DAV College, Sector 10, police also intervened after students gathered outside the gate and started raising slogans against rival groups. The students were moved away from the gate and the road in front of the college was subsequently cleared.
