New Delhi: Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit India to attend the upcoming BRICS summit, Chinese state media reported on Thursday.
The visit comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilise ties between India and China and growing global uncertainty, including conflicts in West Asia and the Russia-Ukraine war.
China’s official news agency Xinhua reported that Xi will travel to India to participate in the BRICS summit.
India, which currently holds the BRICS chair, will host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.
Xi’s first India visit since 2019
The visit will be Xi’s first trip to India in nearly seven years. His last visit was in 2019, when he travelled to Mamallapuram near Chennai for an informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Xi had earlier visited India in 2016 to attend the BRICS summit in Goa. His first visit to India as Chinese president came in September 2014, when he held extensive talks with Modi.
The upcoming visit is expected to provide another opportunity for the two Asian powers to engage at the highest level as they seek to manage bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation within the BRICS grouping.
