New Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) resumed its protest at Jantar Mantar late on Monday night after a day marked by clashes with police during its “Chalo Parliament” march.
Party workers returned to the protest site at around 11 pm, erected a temporary stage and restarted their demonstration. Large numbers of supporters, including students and young protesters, also gathered at Jantar Mantar to continue the agitation.
Earlier in the day, CJP supporters made several attempts to march towards Parliament but were stopped by security personnel. Police used batons and tear gas to disperse the crowd after protesters allegedly tried to breach security barricades.
Delhi Police said more than 118 police personnel, including several senior officers, were injured during the violence, while around 70 protesters were taken into custody.
In an official statement, police accused some protesters of engaging in violent and unlawful behaviour, attacking security personnel and damaging public property, including government vehicles, during the demonstration.
Despite the police action, protesters regrouped at Jantar Mantar later in the evening and vowed to continue their campaign over the alleged NEET paper leak and demands for education reforms.
