ED summons Punjab IAS officer in money laundering probe

Mohali: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Punjab-cadre IAS officer Kanwalpreet Brar on August 18 in connection with its money laundering investigation into the Suntek City project in Mohali.

Brar was serving as Director of Town and Country Planning in 2024, when approvals related to the project were granted. The ED is examining the role of officials allegedly involved in approving revised Change of Land Use (CLU) permissions on the basis of allegedly forged consent letters.

According to sources, the agency is also examining the role of officials posted in the Housing Department in 2024. The summons were reportedly sent to Brar by email. However, when contacted, she said she was not aware of any summons having been issued to her.

Alleged forged consent letters under investigation

The investigation alleges that forged consent letters bearing fake signatures and thumb impressions of landowners were used to obtain CLU approval for the mega project.

According to the investigation, forged consent documents were allegedly prepared in connection with 30.5 acres of land belonging to 15 landowners. The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has already cancelled the project’s licence.

The ED had also alleged in July that Ajay Sehgal, secretary of Indian Cooperative House Building Limited, the promoter of the Suntek City project, was involved in laundering around ₹348 crore in alleged proceeds of crime.

Sehgal was arrested in May and is currently in judicial custody.
